The Port of Prince Rupert Discovery Centre, designed by Waddell & Conder, is a comprehensive look at the northern BC port’s history and current activities. The main components of the exhibit take their inspiration from steel shipping containers, which function as presentation surfaces for the story, told in a dynamic, strongly graphic style. Walking among these “containers,” visitors access a variety of AV elements: port operations, number of ships in dock at any time, types of cargo and a great deal more.
The highlight of this project is the centerpiece; a beautiful interactive element. The 9-foot white disk appears to be ordinary public seating, but at the touch of a hand it is transformed into a rich projected showcase displaying the world’s shipping routes. The visitor has complete control of the program material and can explore various aspects of the story in any order they prefer.
