“Man In Motion” Commemorative Monument

After 3DS successfully built the interior for their Visitor’s Centre for the City of Williams Lake. They were so impressed, they asked 3DS to design and build a monument commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Rick Hansen’s “Man In Motion Tour”. The beautifully fabricated copper globe depicts Rick Hansen’s wheelchair journey around the globe in 1985/86 with an winding copper line tracing his route.

We went though thirty-seven design models to arrive at our final decision. Fabrication had to be considered in every step of the design process. Stability, materials, installation logistics and weathering were analyzed after every design modification. At the same time, those practical details all had to be hidden so the average person could engage directly with the beauty and story of the monument itself.

The monument stands twelve feet high and is something visitors readily connect with – a work that’s clear, inclusive, unpretentious and universally relatable.
