Built in 1937, The Ram has long been a landmark venue for Sun Valley, America’s Premier Ski Resort. Over the years, countless guests came to a treasure its near-perfect balance of fine dining and unpretentious rustic warmth. During our concept development, we were told in no uncertain terms – including by a longtime patron – that we must respect every inch of its 80-plus year history. But it was also clear the space needed a serious refresh. The challenge to our team was “How do we change this iconic space while, in a sense, not changing it?”
Paying close attention and taking special care to preserve the Ram’s unique spirit, we were able to subtly bring this much-loved space into a more modern era. We first identified its defining qualities, since many decor features are considered priceless by devoted fans – the antler chandeliers, the rustic booths and especially the collection of authentic Swiss cowbells. Everything that could be kept was kept. Everything needing to be enhanced or replaced was inspired in design by the Ram’s original style. We made the display kitchen a central feature, adding an impressive copper hood, and transformed a once-constricted entry vestibule into clear, open access. We were particularly pleased that many guests didn’t even realise the booths had been completely replaced – they just suddenly found them strangely more comfortable.
